And I would make the same argument that you did-I refer to my students as my children. A parent of a student I taught a few years ago stated that because I don't have children I can't relate to them like a mother would. Well, I'm a teacher, first and foremost, and all the points you made, well, I want to throw them in this woman's face. Not professional, but I was just as hurt as you were.
